Body:
The sun is out, the days are long, and your pet is probably loving every minute of it. But while summer means more time outdoors and extra walks, it also brings serious risks for our furry friends. Unlike humans, dogs and cats can't just take off a layer of clothing or grab a cold drink when they're hot.
At Whiskers & Wag, we want to make sure your best friend stays safe, cool, and comfortable all season long. Here is our ultimate guide to summer pet safety.
1. Watch Out for Heatstroke
Heatstroke is one of the most dangerous summer threats for pets. Dogs and cats don't sweat like we do—they rely on panting to cool down, which is much less efficient.
Signs of heatstroke include:
-
Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
-
Drooling heavily
-
Weakness, stumbling, or collapse
-
Vomiting or diarrhea
What to do: If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately. Apply cool (not cold) water to their paws and belly, and call your vet right away.
2. Never Leave Them in a Parked Car
This cannot be said enough: Never leave your pet alone in a parked car. Even with the windows cracked, the inside of a car can reach 120°F (49°C) in minutes on an 85°F day. If you're running errands, leave your pet at home where they are safe and cool.
3. Protect Their Paws
Asphalt and concrete get scorching hot in the summer sun. If it's too hot for your bare hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Try to walk your dog during the early morning or late evening when the ground is cooler. If you must walk during the day, consider protective dog booties.

4. Keep Them Hydrated
Just like us, pets need more water in the summer. Always carry a portable water bottle and bowl on walks. At home, make sure their water bowl is always full and consider adding a few ice cubes for a refreshing treat.
5. Provide Shade and Cooling Spots
If your pet spends time outdoors, make sure they have access to plenty of shade. But shade isn't always enough. A dedicated cooling mat can help lower their body temperature significantly. These mats work by absorbing your pet's body heat and are a game-changer for hot summer days.
6. Grooming Matters
A thick coat can actually insulate pets from the heat, but matted fur traps heat and moisture. Regular brushing helps remove dead undercoat and keeps air flowing to the skin. However, never shave your dog down to the skin—their coat protects them from sunburn!
7. Be Careful with Water Activities
Not all pets are natural swimmers. If you're taking your dog to a pool or lake, never leave them unsupervised. A life vest with a handle is a great investment for safety, even for strong swimmers.
8. Watch Out for Summer Pests
Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are out in full force during the summer. Make sure your pet is on a veterinarian-recommended flea and tick preventative.
Final Thoughts
Summer is a time for fun, adventure, and making memories with your pet. By following these simple tips, you can ensure they stay happy, healthy, and cool all season long.
From all of us at Whiskers & Wag, have a safe and wonderful summer!
